I have an idea and I gotta tell someone about it or else I won't be able to stop thinking about it.
It's a concept for a rottmnt au focused on the Disaster Twins, which I'm calling the Hybrid Twins AU. Full concept is under the cut, but if you don't wanna read my whole explanation, the idea is that Donnie and Leo got mutated with each others' DNA as well as Lout Jitsu's.
So you know those pods that Draxum stuck the turtles in when he mutated them? Well, in this AU, the gargoyles accidentally broke one after they captured Yoshi. Draxum decides it would take too long to fix it first, because he finally has Lou Jitsu and he's not going to risk giving him time to escape, even if he seems remarkably content in that cage.
So he has decided to go ahead and mutate the turtles, but he only has three pods, and four turtles. He's aware that if he sticks two turtles in one pod, they will mutate with each other's DNA as well as Lou Jitsu's, which could be unstable – all his experiments so far have involved combining only two sets of DNA – but, he reasons, if two of them... don't make it, then he'll still have the other two.
Obviously, this means he has to consider which ones he'd rather keep, and which ones have the most compatible DNA, to increase the chances of a stable mutation. After some consideration, he picks the red-eared slider and the spiny softshell. They're both aquatic species, and are similar in size and approximate age, so he estimates that they have the best chances of survival. And it could be interesting to see how their traits combine.
Draxum goes ahead with the mutation as planned, but with two turtles sharing a pod. All he actually gets to see of their combined mutation is that they now share similar markings, before Lou breaks out and snatches the turtles, just like in canon.
From then on things aren't really any different, except for the twins looking different and having a slightly different dynamic.
I really wanna draw out what they look like properly, as that's what I was focusing on when I came up with this, but I literally only thought this up today, and haven't had a chance to sit down with my sketchbook yet. For now, have this reference sheet I made for their markings and colour:
Tumblr media
Interesting things to note, which should be visible here:
- their skin tones have shifted towards each other, so Donnie's skin is a little lighter and Leo's is a little darker
- they both have yellow sclera (in canon, Leo has white sclera and Donnie has yellow)
- their shoulder markings go all the way down to their elbows
- Leo's markings are a bit brighter than Donnie's
Other things I came up with:
- their shell markings also match now, though Donnie's still a softshell and Leo is not. So Donnie gained lighter-coloured markings that perfectly match Leo's shell pattern, and Leo has dappled darker spots on his shell like the spots on Donnie's.
- both of the twins are sensitive about their shells being touched. And they're very defensive of each other, so when they were tots, if one of them got his shell touched by someone when he didn't want to be touched, then both of them would try and bite the offender. Splinter has scars on his fingers, yes
- you know how rise!Donnie always wants to blow things up? And how his brothers always stop him? Yeah, in this AU, the only ones trying to hold him back are Raph and Mikey. Do not leave the twins alone together, because Leo's definitely not gonna be holding Donnie back from going lethal
- related to the last point: moral alignments! The way I see it, rise!Raph is neutral or lawful good, rise!Mikey is chaotic good, rise!Leo is... probably chaotic neutral, and rise!Donnie is chaotic evil. In this AU, the twins are both chaotic evil
- how about I let Leo swallow a sandwich whole. Even better, let the twins have eating competitions that focus solely on "how much can you swallow at once without chewing", which Raph and Mikey might try to get involved in, but it would eventually just become a twin thing. Mikey would always be the first one out, and Raph would last a bit longer simply by being bigger, but then it would be down to the twins
- can't believe I almost forgot this one, but they have actual twin sense. The mystics involved in their mutation, combined with their Hamato genetics, plus the fact that Leo and Donnie got mutated in the same pod and share enough DNA to be almost (but not quite)as closely related as identical twins, means that they have the ability to sense each other's emotions, and will probably figure out how to do the Ninja Mind Meld before even unlocking their ninpo. Or even before using any mystic powers whatsoever. Because yeah. I'm a sucker for giving them twin telepathy hehehe
- outfits! Have you noticed that in canon, whenever the turtles get dressed up, Leo and Donnie's outfits usually complement each other? Most notably the sweaters they wore for the family dinner in Repairin' the Baron, but other times too. Yeah, I definitely wanna draw them in matching/complementary outfits.
- I considered having Donnie wear a different mask, one like Leo's, because of his stripes, but I don't wanna get rid of Donnie's eyebrows, and neither does he, and trying to draw eyebrows on a mask like that would be too difficult. However, when little Leo failed to convince Donnie that they should have matching masks, he wouldn't stop crying over Donnie "trying to cover up his stripes" and "not wanting to be twins" and stuff like that. So, to get him to stop crying, Donnie drew red stripes on his mask, above his eyes where his natural stripes are (I can totally picture it and I absolutely need to draw it soon). He likes the way it looks and likes matching with his twin, so he keeps drawing those stripes along with his eyebrows
- with how similar Donnie and Leo look, there's no way anyone can deny that they're twins, not even Donnie, but it still bugs him that he doesn't know how they are twins, because he can tell that they appear to be hybrids of two different turtle species. He can't find the answers on his own, and so he bugs Splinter about it until he finally caves and tells the boys that they were mutated using human DNA (not specifying which human) and that Blue and Purple got some of each others' DNA as well. So when Leo is wailing about thinking Donnie doesn't want to be twins with him, Donnie comforts him in his own logical way and assures him that there's no way they could ever NOT be twins, pointing out that they share more DNA with each other than they do with Raph or Mikey or even whatever human they got their DNA from, and adds on that even if they didn't have that much genetic material in common, he'd still want to be twins. (I need them to be soft, plz! Turtle tot twins are adorable!)
- speaking of Splinter, whenever the twins aren't wearing their signature colours, he has a really, REALLY hard time telling them apart. He was worried about being able to tell Raph and Leo apart in canon; you can't tell me he wouldn't get these twins mixed up All. The. Time.
- the twins are nearly inseparable. They always wanna do everything together, especially when they're young. Because of this, they end up knowing a lot of the same stuff, because they are each others' favorite person to info-dump to when they learn something new. So this Donnie has a bit more respect for Leo's intelligence, which is to say he won't outright say or even imply that Leo is stupid. Calling him smart would still be going too far though, duh. Gotta have some squabbling somewhere in here.
- yeah I guess they're really competitive. They compete over everything. Including rights to being the older twin. I'm a firm believer of the the fact that they have no way of knowing which of them is actually older, even in canon, so there will be no "older twin" or "younger twin" headcanons here. It's way more funny if they're constantly arguing about it, anyway. Or if they switch it up depending on their mood, cuz sometimes being the second youngest of four can be pretty appealing.
- uhhhh let's see do I have anything else...?
- oh yeah, I'm considering giving Leo some sort of shell cover? 'Cause I said that he's sensitive about people touching his shell, like Donnie is, but he has a hard shell so he doesn't actually need a battle shell.
- leading from that, though, I think both twins have a lot of similar sensory issues. And they're both neurodivergent. Donnie is autistic, and Leo is AuDHD (that refers to having both autism & ADHD, in case you didn't know. It's what I've got)
Anyway that's all i have for now. Might edit this post if I think of anything more later.

Murphy’s Law
How did we get here?
Part One of my Liminal Space Au which I’ve linked the Masterpost of here. I’d recommend reading that post just to get some context on what’s to come in this little blurb.
************************************************************************
Two years after the Kraang invasion, the boys and April have uncovered that the U.S. government is secretly kidnapping and experimenting on mutants. During one of their missions, they encounter a yokai with the ability to supposedly move both forward and backward in time, but only by a few days. They try helping this yokai only to learn that the Earth Protection Force (EPF) has fatally injected them with a rather lethal amount of modified Empyrean they harvested from sister Kraang when she was captured and studied.
They were only able to neutralize this yokai by using the Kraang technology that initially nullified their mystic powers like in the movie and while the yokai is able to move spatially through time and space, they aren’t exactly capable of changing the state of their own body so in essence without intervention they could have died of old age so to speak.
With their last few breaths, the yokai transforms into a pocket watch that contains a rather alarming amount of mystic energy similar to how Karai was transformed into a sword to seal the Shredder. The watch is bestowed upon the boys for the time being as Draxum is in Japan meeting with some of his old colleagues. Donnie tasks himself to see whether or not he’ll be able to either harness the powers of the artifact/further study how the effects of empyrean could lead to such a state in the first place, (perhaps to even find a way to reverse it).
He spends a couple days troubleshooting theories here and there but by the end of each session he seals it up by manifesting a purple bubble around the object using his mystic powers.
On one particular day, he steps outside his lab while studying the artifact to retrieve one of the packages he’s ordered from online, but not before sealing the pocket watch in a suspended purple orb, just in case. Shelldon accompanies him since the package he ordered was larger than he could handle.
He’s away from his lab for exactly seven minutes.
Leo and Mikey step into the room two minutes after, trying to scope out what Donnie’s been up to and whether or not he’s withholding some goodies. They do the obligatory search through his stuff calling dibs on doo-dads here and there, before they finally come across the Chekhov’s gun of this story, the pocket watch. Leo is more fascinated by the orb and how it suspended the item playing around with it carelessly.
He throws it over to Mikey who catches it worriedly but Mikey proceeds to squish the orb noticing how it really does have a rubber bubble like texture before throwing it back to Leo.
Raph, who’s big brother senses have been tingling, checks out the commotion coming from the lab because he knows Donnie stepped out just a moment ago. He’s about to reprimand them both for going through Donnie’s stuff without him present but almost instantly Leo hurls the orb at his face and Raph proceeds to block it out of instinct with his ninjutsu unknowingly causing the orb to react poorly and begin to bounce around the room carelessly knocking over much of Donnie’s lab equipment and research.
The brothers do their best to avoid the projectile all the while the pocket watch begins to pulse from the rough treatment. Leo’s able to portal it within Mikey’s reach who in turn is able to use his mystic whip to grab it. However, the whip grips it a bit too harshly causing the purple bubble to pop and the pocket watch unceremoniously drops to the cement crackling in green power.
Raph and Mikey automatically panic worrying about how Donnie’s going to retaliate in regards to them trespassing on his research. They approach the watch and scoop it up, placing it on the table it was originally set upon.
Leo’s slightly more worried about how the pocket watch is behaving strangely but is distracted as Donnie runs into the room, having left his package with Shelldon, since he was able to hear the yelling from quite a bit away.
Raph and Mikey immediately begin coming up with excuses for their presence turning away from the discarded watch.
Big Mistake.
Donnie’s the only one paying attention to how the watch surges with green energy quickly pulling Leo close to him so that he can hastily manifest a small wall shielding them from it. When the light dims, Donnie notices how Raph and Mikey’s image glow aggressively green and practically start glitching out of reality. He can only watch on in horror as they panic at the circumstances until they just blip out of existence and he proceeds to run to their last position yelling out their names frantically.
“Donnie?”
Donatello’s eyes snap towards Leonardo and only then does he notice that his brother’s shoulder got nicked by the green energy and it’s quickly spreading to the rest of his body.
“Leo,” he begins repeating desperately. He retreats back to his brother.
“What’s happening?” Leo observes his hands glitching before looking up back at Donnie reaching out to him.
They grasp hands but Leo is as good as gone within the next couple of moments.
*******************************************************************
This is pretty much where Cause and Effect diverge as mentioned. Cause following through with present Donnie’s POV and Effect following through with Leo, Mikey and Raph’s POV in the future. I do actually plan on making a small comic for this when I get the chance.

I really love your draxum raises the turtles au! But something caught my eye. Leo caring about being in good graces and raph silently begging him not to say anything, does that mean hes kind of a snitch? I might be reading it wrong but I'm rly curious.
Leo is a bit of a snitch! But he’s also really lazy, in the sense that he’ll do the least amount for the most benefit, or just avoid conflict completely if he’s able. So after the events of my fic here Raph definitely has to do Leo's share of chores for a week at least (Donnie probably gets in on that one too, so he can focus on rebuilding the destroyed experiments).
I see Leo in my AU as someone who’s an opportunist. He doesn’t go out of his way to do particularly nice or bad things; he’s very chaotic neutral. So yeah, if he’d felt it’d benefit him more to tattle on Mikey and Raph he would’ve, but he’s holding a grudge against Baron currently so the indirect revenge was more appealing.

Hey so its that same person who just recently asked about the whole Tomiko's dad thing but i have a new question. how does Tomiko and her mother know Draxum? Like do they know know each other or is just that thing were they run into each other time to time and don't talk to each other a lot? Also how did they meet Draxum in the first place. Also again if this question was already asked im sorry lol
Senri Kaneko (Tomiko's mom) is basically the Hidden City CPA/Banking specialist, but also runs the majority of the mob groups books. She's Lawful Neutral, leaning Evil, if anything, but is a master at exploiting loopholes.
Draxum, being in charge of Hidden City defense, has been working with and a client of Senri's for a long time. They don't consider each other friends but also wouldn't admit they enjoy each other's company. Draxum has no opinion of Tomiko, she does her job and they've spoken about 30 words to each other total.

Story Summary:
For as long as she could remember, Mei lived in a lab. She remembered being watched over by a large goat-man called Baron Draxum, and an Inugami called Chung-I. While the Baron would check her health and mutation process; Chung-I took a more sympathetic approach towards her. He would often talk about his own life, and even was the one who chose her name, Mei.
Throughout her life, she was described as “unstable”. Considering she was the first prototype of Draxum’s mutations, she was far from perfect scientifically. Her blood had to be mixed with constant stabilizers or she would go into seizures; she would be chained down or she would pick at parts of her skin that she described as “burning”. Through the mistakes in her, she did hear of more experiments being made, but she isn’t 100% sure.
Eventually, she was finally perfected around the time she was a teenager. Finally allowed to be seen outside the lab, she was immediately put to train under Draxum, along with another student named Scarlet. Almost instantly, Mei fell smitten for the other creature. Considering she had never met anyone both her age or anyone aside from Chung-I in general, these feelings could be understood. For a long while, Mei harbored a rather obvious crush on Scarlet, shown through her becoming flustered around her as well as being hesitant to train with her out of her own empathy. Most of the time, Mei was met with grumbles and stubbornness. All of this culminated into Scarlet blurting out feelings for Mei, something the latter found enlightening as she expressed her own feelings.
Through awkward teen years into adulthood, Mei and Scarlet developed a secret slow-burn relationship. Although being with each other made them both happy, there still was that lingering hunger inside both of them demanding freedom, demanding inner peace. Ultimately, they decide to stay loyal to Draxum and the Underground, while also exploring the world for themselves. During their exploits, they run into the Turtles. Mei is extremely empathetic toward the boys and enjoys spending time with them. It is unknown if Mei was aware of the correlation between Project Renaissance and the boys.
Currently, Mei lives with Scarlet in an abandoned subway station and regularly visit the Turtles to train and spend time with them.
Relationships -
Family:
Unknown biological parents
Chung I; adoptive father
Artemisia; future adoptive daughter

Michaelangelo; close friend
Donnatello; close friend
Raphael; good friend
Leonardo; good friend
Love Interest(s):
Scarlet Pieh Chi; current fiancee
Songs:
"Heartburn"; Wafia (Jarami Remix)
“Lucky”; Jason Mraz feat. Colbie Caillet
“Thunder Clatter”; Wild Cubs (Chelsea Cutler Cover)
“What I Wouldn't Do”; Serena Ryder
Trivia:
Mei’s choice of weapon is a pair of tessen. She prefers speed and agility when fighting over everything else, and finds these weapons most useful.
Mei would most likely be voiced by Rachel Bloom, who voices Autumn Blaze on MLP: Friendship is Magic.
Mei is a mild practitioner of the Buddhism faith. It’s helped her from going insane like her beloved Scarlet.
For as much as Mei is more innocent than that of her partner, she is quite the sucker for instances of Scarlet saying… rather inappropriate things in the languages that she knows.
When living in the Underground, Mei was surprisingly much more feared than that of Scarlet. This was mainly in the sense of Mei often smiling in dangerous or threatening situations; giving off a creepy vibe.
